I'd thought I'd post the Lib Dem manifesto for Cornwall the whole manifesto is here but here are the bits which I think are my favorite things;

We will freeze Councillors’ allowances - at a time when the economy is contracting and
people are losing their jobs and savings, Councillors need to tighten their belts too

We will make Cornwall the ‘Green Peninsula’, leading the way nationally in sustainable policy, technology and the way we do our business.

We can now promise to cut your Council Tax in real terms over the next four years, whilst
maintaining and improving services. This comes as a direct benefit of creating a single council for Cornwall, which will result in over £70 million pounds worth of savings across the county.

We will ensure at least 1200 new energy efficient homes earmarked for local families and guaranteed to be affordable in perpetuity, are delivered every year.

We will spend at least £1 million to support Cornwall Credit Union - making possible their work to help households access affordable credit and tackle financial exclusion.

Now the reason why I chose those five, is not because the are the most hard hitting to put in a blog, but they give you an idea of what we are planning to do.

Councilors wages must be put on hold, and further to that we must make it so normal, working people can serve on our council not just the retired or unemployed. I've heard from many people that the only way to do this is increase the allowances offered, but that'll only make sitting councillors better off, the way to do it is by having meetings in the evening, allowing people to engage in the democratic process without having to miss work, it's not a revolutionary idea but if you want more people involved you have to think how the change the pattern of how the council works, not how much the councillors are paid!

The second thing is making Cornwall a "Green Peninsular." I feel that this is at utmost importance, over the next 50 years our planet is going to face some extreme weather, and Cornwall (being on the southwesterly tip of the UK) will be bearing the brunt of it, we have to look at everything we do to bring our carbon emissions down, from the way we produce energy away from coal, gas and oil, onto the natural resources that surround Cornwall, we can produce energy from Wave, to Wind, Cornwall is surrounded by energy, we just have to capture it!

Council tax, unfair, unjust, brought in by the tories without factoring the ability to pay, and made worse by this Labour Government's contempt for local democracy. Cornwall now has a unitary council that means 7 chief executives have merged into one. So effectively we're cutting the cost it takes to run Cornwall so we can pass on those savings on to the council tax payer. We're going to cut council tax = FACT.

1200 affordable green homes to go to local people every year. I dont even have to explain this when some communities down here only have 40% of houses occupied all year round!

The final thing is a credit union to help working people afford a home, when wages down here are 2/3rds of the national average, and house prices are higher than almost everywhere else, we need money at low cost to help us get our homes!

Any way sorry it was a bit long, I know blogs are meant to be 200 words or so long but hey, I have a lot to say!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-19736153724515844382009-05-05T20:56:00.002+01:002009-05-05T21:42:43.661+01:00It's election time!Well it's now official, I am the Liberal Democrat Candidate for the Trehaverne Ward of Truro. A city which I have lived in all my life and a place that I will always refer to as my home.

The election is on June 4th, and I am currently knocking on doors and leafleting as many houses, speaking to as many people, and getting as many people involved in the decision processes that the new Cornwall Council will be undertaking, and I have to say there is a stark choice that is before the electorate.

On the one hand, we have the conservatives, who claim they are the party of change, on the other hand you have the Indy candidate, and somewhere stuck in a rut is the Labour party candidate.

Lets face it. The tories dont believe in anything, and as we saw with grammar schools when they do attempt to make a policy announcement, they are split down the middle. And now for this set of council elections they have put forward a total number of ............................................ ZERO policies. None, zilch, nadda, nothing. To put it into context if I put forward an essay with similar content I wouldnt even get any marks because it doesnt make any points and it doesnt even tell us why they have reached any justification at all. I have, at least, got a manifesto, which is full of promises, from the Freezing of allowences for councillors, to the cutting of council tax in real terms. Manifestos are MEANT to have policy, they are MEANT to tell the electorate what we plan to do. The only thing on their website is a 22 page attack document on the Lib Dems. Their manifesto is only 9 pages. SO you plan to attack people who are forward thinking and progressive, where is the alternative?

The tories are spin, they're a glorifed PR agency, with no belief system in place. Nothing to bind them together, they are a party that stands up for yesterday, and thats not what people in Cornwall want to go back to.

This is because that over the past 50 years, we've had a rotary government, swapping between one party to another, taking turns and sharing power between the two, and over the past 30 years, we've had Thatcher, and Blair, and people dont want that. If we are to restore peoples faith in politicians, we have to stand for something, and that something must be clear. It has to be an core set of principles. and that is something that is lacking in both the Labour Party under Gordon, and the Tories.

Just a quick word about the indy, please dont use the position to try and ban my favorite film again, the Life of Brian was meant to annoy you and it got it's reaction now stop being horrible to almost everyone and be happy, chillax, the modern world isnt out to get you, and if you stop having a go at people you'll realise we're all the same.

We have a stark choice here in Cornwall, it's either for a vision for the future of the county, or one for the past. The real change will be when the Lib Dems get in power and bring back the idea of good government, bring the idea that the underdogs in society should be protect and if the system isnt fair, it's time to change it.

Come with me on the campaign trail, and together we'll see that Cornwall needs more than just spin, it needs promises.Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-52421944138843360052009-04-18T15:18:00.002+01:002009-04-18T15:24:39.091+01:00Spotify, and being illI have realised, now, more than ever, that being ill sucks, the programs on dave are actually repeated weekly, and the programs on yesterday, are the same all week, so I have been very bored.

Just a quick one really, I'm pointing people to Spotify which is an amazing thing, it allows almost unlimited listening with very few adverts between songs. The quality is quite good, and the range of artists is enough to entertain my eclectic mix of stuff from Pearl Jam, to Philip Glass! There is no Metallica, or Tool but I can understand that Metallica dont see it as profit making so they wont do it! But it'd awesome, have a listen.

Ohh I'm also on Twitter as well! Just want to clear one thing up as well, I am not anything to do with the GTA IV character call Thomas Stubbs the Third!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-86587208431445609422009-04-16T21:02:00.004+01:002009-04-16T21:20:09.664+01:00Blugh and illness and some understanding the obama "effect"I've been bedridden for the past 24 hours, and can I just say that day time telly, is dull and boring, there's not anything interesting on apart from on the yesterday channel, and old episodes of Top Gear on Dave.

Any way, a few days ago, I tried to begin to understand how both the Labour Party and Conservative Party claim to be the face of what Obama stands for. First things first, Obama is a Liberal we can see that in the way he has brought about common sense to foreign policy, brought the idea of Keynesianism back to economic policy (which is working), and a willingness to listen to those who disagree.

So with the Tory party giving their young members t shirts with blue skys and the word change, the tory's are trying to say that they are the british version of Obama. Lets get one thing straight, Liberal Conservative is an oxymoron, and doesnt make sense. The economic policy of the tories is "do nothing!" Which is to say, we dont care about poor people, we just dont want taxes to go up for rich people. Foreign policy they effectively similar to the Labour party, and that means, the Iraq War, they were both for it!

The Labour Party have no right either to call themselves as part of the Liberal ideology, because we've seen what over a decade of authoritarian home office has done, peaceful protesters being punched kicked and arrested for doing nothing wrong, an illegal war in Iraq and a economic policy which only benefits people like Fred the Shred, and people who can afford to make big purchases on the high street, with the stupid and wasteful vat cut.

Look at Obama's policies, his style and what he says, and make your own mind up!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-31372056403278031752009-04-14T17:57:00.004+01:002009-04-14T18:16:52.241+01:00oooooooooooohhhhhhhh exciting and grrrrHellooooo, well bloody hell hasnt this been a long time since my last blog!

Any way sorry I havent done this for ages, I've been a little busy, well very busy!

First of all recently I got selected to be the candidate in a local council election, but I'll blog about that later on. I am now the candidate for the Trehaverne ward for Cornwall Council election on 4th June. But again more about that later.

The real point of this blog is this;- I DONT CARE ABOUT PUERILE EMAILS. It's consumed the media of the past weekend, and it was purely a discussion about how immature people have been. I bet the emails going round the tories are just as bad, and not intent for publication, infact, they're probably going round every office in the country! Did the news media just get really bored about reporting important stuff? Did the BBC/itv/sky/newspaper editors just sit round and think what the easiest story to report? It's not like there's a massive economic crisis, two wars which the country is embroiled in and effectively a revolution coming about in moldova due to the use of social networking sites. No they chose the content of an email which they cant read out, sent by a bloke we've never heard off, sent to another bloke we've never heard off!

PLEASE CAN WE HAVE SOME PROPER NEWSTom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-40038746363337690702008-01-04T16:42:00.000+00:002008-01-04T16:55:47.762+00:00Barack ObamaHello!

Well what a night, Barack Hussien Obama, has achieved something that six months ago people said was impossible. The audacity of hope is now changing to the dream of hope, the hope for something new, and now the hope that change will come.

I think Barack's Iowan nomination comes from not only young people like me in the US but a whole cross section of society wanting change. The US system is something that mystifies a lot of people, and endears many more, but hope has now entered into the equation. Hope has never before been used as an election tool, hope, it seems, is the dream policy, to hope is to think, to hope is to realise what a nation can do, and hope is the opposite of fear.

I think that the Lib Dems, are a party that embodies hope, one that looks to the future, and a party that cares about what the future holds for our children, and our children's children. Hope for me, in the UK in 2008, is something which our country needs to embrace. 2008 will be a good year the Lib Dems, and we shall see what will happen in the US!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-24669628720553964092008-01-02T17:05:00.000+00:002008-01-02T17:12:37.772+00:00HollaHi Everybody,

Wow, since my last blog a lot has happened;

I passed my masters

Nick Clegg is now Liberal Democrat leader

Been to New York

Christmas

NYE.

So yeah you can probably understand why the idea of blogging havent been at the top of my mind. But First of all Congrats to Mr Clegg for winning the Lib Dem leadership election, I backed him and I hope that he will bring us more success this year. Again, Vincent Cable started this but I think Vince may be the starter, Nick's going to be the driver and we shall see that by the end of the year people are going to be looking to the lib dems more and more, not of a party of opposition, but of a party that represents them, and what our vision of Briton is. So yeah 2008 is going to be very interesting!

Secondly NEWWWWWWWWWW York
was very cold and I got a new watch :D
But other than that it was amazing. I loved it, it's just totally different, yet similar. Anyway, I suggest you go there.

Any way that is all, regular blogging will now happen after the hectic month of dec!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-46910510852368165922007-11-24T12:30:00.000+00:002007-11-24T12:37:52.504+00:00Days offI rarely find time to actually sit down and do nothing. Aka do nothing days. But today is one of them, and I'm loving it.

I'm happy my summer wont be spoilt by football, I'm happy I'm going to Brussels on Tuesday for a nice trip to see the EU and the European Commission and I'm happy that I'm going to New York the following week after NUS decides to change for the better.

Yes life is sweet, I'm even starting to play world of warcraft again (yes I know it is sad!) But tomorrow is back to London, however there's something exciting before I catch the train, and that is the quick fire questions poised to both Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne which is happening tomorrow at the Blue Bar in Porthtowan, I'm looking forward to it!

I've already voted for Nick Clegg, because I feel he's the best communicator, and best leader the party has. It's time for the Liberal Democrats to go into 5th gear and reach out to the people who dont normally vote for us.

Any way have a good do nothing day, and I'll be writing to you again from either Brussels, London, Bristol, Leicster or New York! I do get about a bit dont I!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-91839958800246538702007-11-21T20:14:00.000+00:002007-11-21T20:22:52.707+00:00Football = crap and therefore not a sportFootball, I hate it, it is not a sport and it is not a talent.
Its kicking a ball, and diving and crying. AND then having the audacity of claiming £1billion a week to do it. I bloody hate the stupid thing. It's not like rugby where there is actually team work and people who dont spend their £1billion a week pay on a haircut.

oh and that beckham prat, he's like david blaine, he's a git person! Footballers are just over payed whining talentless idiots who dont contribute anything to society.

Why is it so popular? Whats the difference between football and a boy band? NOTHING they are both overpaid talents idiots who cant get a job anywhere else.

Any way time to calm downTom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-45788673453353896522007-11-16T12:48:00.000+00:002007-11-16T12:54:48.080+00:00afternoon everyoneSo it's done, my magnum opus is completed, and how do I feel? Like I want to curl up in a ball and do nothing for a week! Never mind

It's been a busy three months! But my diss is in and now I can actually go out to work, earn money and do more NUS stuff! This weekend, if I feel better, will be spent in Bangor then Belfast, and then London, with Wednesday and thursday being spent at work!

So what do people do with days off? What am I going to do on sunday? watch telly? I havent done that for ages! or play world of warcraft? Yes I am a geek, but more importently I'm done. And I cant wait to see what challenges lay ahead for me!

Also
Vote Clegg!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-82391961925798178782007-11-13T18:34:00.000+00:002007-11-13T19:21:50.955+00:00Libraries, I love emHere I am, sitting in the Library at Swansea University doing work and all I can think about is doing another blog. (Actually no it isn't I am just bored of coursework, well bored isnt the right word, overloaded that's more like it, though it's almost done read through tomorrow!!!!)

Any way so we've chosen Paddick to be the candidate for London mayor. I was quite gutted when I found out becuase although incredibly busy I did ask if I could help Chamali. However in Paddick we do have someone who has over 20 years in the MET. So he knows London. I think that both Paddick and Chamali stood out as very exceptional candidates, and as I work part time in London I feel like I do want to have a say in how the city is run. I care deeply when the tube go on strike because it effects me, I care about how expensive the congestion charge is because it affects me, and yes even though I do spend most of my time in Tavistock Square in a hotel, I do actually want a job there and to live there for a few years. London is a young city, it's bright and buzzing. In the next few weeks I shall be in Brussels and New York, and by all accounts Brussels lacks personality and New York lacks intimacy.

And on the actual race, that is now going to happen, this is what I feel the candidates represent

Boris; a London of the 1950s, one in which was dominated by smog, tradition and conservative

Ken; Today's London a London that is brightening up but somehow wont achieve its full potential, a London that has the ability to be dominated by striking tube drivers, and a London which will just stay the same, good but not good enough.

Brian; Obviously Brian represents what London could become, a London which is brighter, successful, and based around people power. A London which will be home to millions of people and yet you'll feel safe in your house, a London which will welcome visitors new and old alike, and a London which will be available 24/7. A London which will embrace the olympic spirit. It will be our London and Your London.

anyway I look forward to the fight, probably because most of my friends who live in London (I mean NUS friends) want Ken to maintain his lead on London. I like Ken, but Ken just isnt Liberal and does think to much inside the box.Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-49595515350667988662007-11-11T19:26:00.000+00:002007-11-11T23:44:55.782+00:00Blogness
Having started this on Friday, I've found people actually read what i write, which is amazing!

Also Ive started to get used to this thing so here's a picture of me;

Dont I look lovely? A group of officers from around Wales are trying to scrap the full time NUS Wales Womens' officer and replace it with a full time NUS Wales Welsh Language officer. As you can probably guess, I have a unique understanding of this issue! Having sat in several University of Wales meetings only to see it's demise this year. Second I'm former NUS Wales NEC so again I am aware of the issues, but they'll be a blog on this on my NUS blog, both on officer online, and my NUS comment blog.

So what am I doing at 10am on Sunday morning, well nothing much really just looking forward to stress relief thursday. Oh and seeing friends. Having left Swansea it is quite sad to leave but I feel it's time, everyone needs to move on and my time has come, dont worry I'll come and visit, partly to help the Lib Dems, and partly to make sure JCs is still there.

Also it's the beer race on Wednesday, I've run it once, I've stewarded the rest of the time but I like doing it, it's part of Swansea RAG which raises over £20000 for charity last year so it's all worth it.

Any Way toddlypipTom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-68701980970545289562007-11-10T17:48:00.000+00:002007-11-10T17:54:12.701+00:00t minus 5daystill it's due in, 3000 to go!!!If any one wants to employ someone who can understand the depravity of war and how Bosnia decended into violence give me a call!Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-47874774005857888332007-11-09T12:52:00.000+00:002007-11-09T12:58:21.618+00:00BT Bloody BroadbandYo
Right I am at home doing coursework, using a wide variety of online journals to help finish my dissertation, and then the bloody internet goes down. I checked everything, wireless router to my own modem, and it's fine, I use the other computer in the house and the internet doesnt work on that one either. By this time you can probably imagine I am again quite peeved.

Any way I just realised you can now get broadband over your phone, so a quick phone call to my network and I am now on my3 Broadband Lite. Yes it costs £10 a month and I can get the internet any where, and it wont cost me £20 a week like wireless does in hotels. I can use it fairly quickly and all I need is a program to download which is awesome. Any way thanks for saving my sanity 3. Otherwise BT bloody broadband will be shot.Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-81189019768925464262007-11-08T17:51:00.000+00:002007-11-08T19:00:41.116+00:0056 Day detention terrorism and BritainYesterday I got quite annoyed. Actually very annoyed.

On BBC Radio Cornwall there was a debate about the detention of terrorist suspect for 56 days with out trail. Which I am completely against as it is illiberal, irrational and will only seek to undermine the communities we need to support in the fight against international terrorism.

Lets get one thing straight, terrorism has been part of British life for over 40 years. When I was in primary school (in 1994) we weren't allowed to go to London because of the terrorist threat from the IRA. This "new" terrorism may be different in nature but the motives are the same (based on a ideology and sense of Islamic nationalism and fundamentalism; yes folks this all started when one Saudi namely Osama Bin Laden wanted the US to get out of Saudi Arabia), but now the terrorists want to kill themselves as well as others.

I've studied terrorism as part of both my under and post Graduate degrees, and lets face it the IRA and Unionist terrorist killed more people on UK soil than Al Quedia has ever done.

Anyway I'm deviating from the point. I heard on the radio from one man;

"99% of Muslims aren't terrorists although 99% of Terrorists are Muslims. Send them Back."

I was shocked and appalled by this language. There were more Terrorists in the Maze Prison than have been charged in the past 5 years.

And secondly send who back, who are "them" are them legitimate citizens who help build British society in to one of the greatest in the world but have a different religion to us? I may be white, middle class, and hold a degree but I feel offended when my friends are referred to as "Them."

I honestly feel that 56 day detention is dangerous both in ways aiding extremist organisations and tearing away our civil liberties. (according to the man civil liberties and human rights are different)

If you want to lock people up use the money for more bloody police officers, oh and scrap the card which calls you a number which relates to an entry onto a computer in London. I am a person not a number.

Sorry if thats a bit rantish but the level of the rant just relates to how utterly annoyed I am.Tom Stubbshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14499785003982193833noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7358580752793305843.post-23769364293501472452007-11-08T17:47:00.001+00:002007-11-08T17:50:57.689+00:00Hello!!!Hi everybody!

This is a new blog!
